Winter was definitely coming. To be fair, summer had only ended a few weeks ago, and the cold had not yet set it the way she knew it could, and would, but Kelly could feel the last rays of sun she'd tried to store in her body seeping out of her pores, evaporating from her skin like puddles of rain water on the ground. She was seated on a low stone wall in Organic Park, watching the last moments of the sun as it set below the horizon, and she couldn't help but think of the way the world turned, and how everything happened for a reason, even if you didn't know what that reason may be.
She wiped away a stray tear from her cheek and frowned, unsure why she was crying or whether she was even allowed to cry; it was what she wanted, right? Fate had stepped in and dealt her a hand that was exactly what she'd asked for, right? With one leg crossed over the other and her arms wrapped around her middle, Kelly felt smaller than she'd ever felt in her life, and watching the sun sink below the belt of the world, she wondered what the sun did when it went away, if it was happy waiting until it was time to come up again, or if it spent the twelve hours of the night yearning to rise once more.
The park lights flickered on all at once as if by magic, and the bushes behind her twinkled into being as the hundreds of real fairies lit up their lights, ready for the coming evening. Kelly dragged her gaze away from the darkening sky to sweep over the expanse of the park, hoping that Jacques had received her owl before he'd left the office and apparated home. She shivered slightly and tightened her grip around herself, hating already the cold front that was coming.
