Sometimes, she thought, having the freedom to do whatever wasn't all that great. Now late afternoon, Katya walked aimlessly down the Alley, wondering if she should go home. She should go home, but what would matter, there was no one for her to go home to. Her father was supposed to come to the Alley with her, but he was called in to work. So, she had come by herself. Part of her thought it was great that her father trusted her to come alone, despite the fact she was only eleven, but the rest of her wished she was still small enough to require him to come. Oh well, as her mother had been so fond of saying, If wishes were horses, beggers would ride. Katya sighed, kicking another rock with the toe of her ballet flat.
Perhaps things would be better when she started school where she could start meeting people, maybe a few friends. She sighed again, school was still almost a month away. Who was she kidding, she wouldn't make any friends, she sucked at it. Katya even tried dressing more like the other kids she saw at the Alley, trading her blouses and skirts for jeans and a t shirt. There was nothing else left to do. She had bought all her school things, new clothes, and far too many new books. Perhaps she should get a pet, but they were so much work. Not that she minded work, it's just now that her mother had passed away, she wanted a bit to be a child again. Well, pets were out then, at least right now.
Katya's stomach grumbled, solving her need for something to do. She turned from the direction she was heading, back towards the Leaky Caldron. A salad sounded responsible. Chips were what she was craving though, so she ordered them. A large plate of chips and a large chocolate malt. After paying and receiving her food, Katya found an empty booth in the corner and sat. She slowly ate, as she had been taught, and looked around, people watching. It was one of her favorite past times, after all.
