Lesson 3 : Potion brewing and Wound Healing Paste

Since their last lesson, Anya had been quite busy taking some rest after her last full moon transformation. It may have been a long while ago, but this time around it effected her greatly. What was worse is that she stayed in bed rest most of the time, only doing her work there and being tended to by her mother when Horace wasn't around.

But she was fine now, able to return to work, and very well rested. Today should be interesting since they would be brewing Pepper up potion. Sesshy would love to be stocked up on the potion for when winter hits this year. Setting up their needed ingredients since they were hard to acquire, Anya took a seat at her desk, waiting for her few students to arrive.

Combat boots made a dull thump against the floors as a Mihael hurried off toward her Magical Medicine class. She sighed lightly and slowed down some so as not to be speed walking. She figured she wouldn't have to be there quite that early and just on time would be perfectly fine with her. Also she didn't want to be out of breath when she finally got to class. That would be no fun. A cinnamon stick was in one of her hands, of which she munched on quietly. Yeah- she decided she needed something in her stomach since she hadn't attended breakfast. Rather she sat up in the dorms playing with Kraven, Krio, Suke, and Aki. She didn't get to play with them a whole lot anymore so she figured it was fare to sacrifice food in her stomach for them.

Nnn. A missed breakfast never truly hurt her before. It caused some stomach pains but those always faded when she ate lunch, so no harm done. Well, and it messed with her concentration too... but she always tried to pay attention at least. That was worth something, yeah? When she next glanced down at her cinnamon stick, over half was missing. She blew a raspberry and pouted slightly afterward. Now that just wasn't any fun. Her sugary input would have to come to an end soon, sadly. A slight smile broke out over her lips as she finally reached the classroom.

The Jaganshi decided she would just finish her snack up in the room while awaiting the arrival of other students. She didn't even remember who else was here. All she knew was that each and every one of them was unknown to her. She couldn't seem to make any friends closer to her year apparently. The closest was Sasuke but he was merely a fourth year. That left her alone in all of her classes and soon she wouldn't even go here anymore... That left her even more alone and- I really should just pay attention to class instead of this. I can always think about it later or something... With that thought and done, she sat herself in the back, nibbling on the now slowly diminishing cinnamon stick.

Yay Magical Medicine! Probably one of her most favourite classes as she really wanted to learn as much as she could about the subject. Wanting to be a Mediwitch [even though there were no positions available at Mungo's currently] she arrived in class promptly and smiled at both the Professor and the other girl inside. Someone she'd never spoken to, but she was in Mihael. And wasn't she a Prefect?

Taking out some paper for notes, she wondered what they would be doing today.

"Just keep swimming! Just keep swimming! Just keep swimming swimming swimming!"

Jasmine walked down the singing loudly a song from one of her favorite movies. Finding Nemo = AWESOMENESS! Has she got closer to the classroom she began to hum to herself. Walking in to room she continued humming has she gave even one a smile before taking her seat. Getting out her parch and quill she fell silent since she thought that she was probably disrupting their peace and quiet.

Finally her three students arrived. It has felt like forever, but Anya knew that the upcoming months are most vital to her, but she would not take leave. As hard as it is trying to take care of herself, she felt that she had missed too many days of work. Sadly, she couldn't even finish a lesson this term. Not all of them, which, quite frankly, she hoped she could do better next term or perhaps the one after.

"Hello everyone. Today we'll be brewing Pepper-up potion. We know that it is a standard remedy for colds and winter influenza. Also that it will have you feeling in tip-top shape instantly, but with caution, there will be smoke coming out of your ears for several hours. And lastly, Glover Hipworth invented the potion." She smiled. Tapping her wand on the board, the ingredients listed along with the steps. "You may begin."

Ingredients

150g feverfew leaves, whole
1.5 litres chili essence
2 small lumps jasper, 1 red, 1 yellow or mottled
1 gill finest brandy
36g althea root, diced into cubes approx. 2cm square.
1 mooncalf hoof, powdered
1 sprig peppermint

Directions

1.) Chop the feverfew very finely with a black-handled knife, ensuring that absolutely no stalk is included. Meanwhile, place the red jasper in the bottom of an already hot cauldron, and add the chili essence to the boil. Once this is done, toss in the feverfew with the yellow jasper. The potion should start to smoke immediately, turning viscous and sickly orange-yellow in colour.
2.) Stir carefully for 1 minute in a clockwise direction to ensure none of the mixture spits out - at this stage it is a potent skin irritant, causing blisters to appear almost instantly on contact. Dragon-hide gloves are strongly recommended.
3.) Leave the potion to simmer for 3 minutes, and gradually add the brandy, stirring alternately clockwise and anti-clockwise as you do so. The potion should stop smoking at this point, and when it does so, add half the althea root and all the powdered mooncalf hoof.
4.) Stir thrice anti-clockwise, and wait for the potion to turn green. Once it has done so, add the rest of the roots, and gently place the peppermint onto the surface of the mixture. It should sit without sinking.
5.) Leave the potion to simmer once more for 6 minutes.

The end product should be a frothing, fizzing substance, blue in color. It smells and tastes like concentrated black pepper and Tabasco, but this pungent and often unpalatable taste may be modulated with not more than three dashes of syrup of betony and bramble, or a few drops essence of boomslang.
