i remember when the days were long.
Aaryn was walking up the steps. Why? She felt bad. The paper was in her hand, and that was part of the reason she felt bad. But it wasn't because her reputation was ruined, that was quite alright with her, she felt bad, because she was sure she had hurt Dezi's girlfriend. Or were they still an item? Probably not. She had probably broken up with him by now. Aaryn frowned. This was all wrong. She hadn't meant any of this to happen. She hadn't meant to let temptation get the best of her. But it had. And she had to pay. She knew that much.
She looked up at her happy owl flying above her. He had no clue to what she was feeling. As he landed on her shoulder, she had a feeling he was sensing it. She patted him on the head. He hooted mournfully. It was almost as if he was announcing her presence. "Sad girl coming!" She rolled her eyes and Barney hooted again. He was playing the part of protector now. He would be her savior. He was almost like an older brother. She laughed. Her older brother was her owl.
She reached the top of the steps and sat down. Barney flew and landed on her knee. She opened up the Prophet and looked at Barney. She gave him a half-hearted grin.
"Hey Barney," she said, "listen to this: The impression that Dezi is cheating on Alessa, with a lot of help from Aaryn. Honestly Aaryn, did you have to stoop as low to steal another girl's boyfriend? What kind of Slytherin scum are you to go creeping around and ruining someone's relationship? And take it personal as this is coming from a Slytherin housemate."
She stopped. She was crying a bit now. Not because of what he said, but because of thinking about Dezi. She had to stop this. It was stupid. He was just a stupid boy. Barney hooted again, mournfully. Aaryn grinned a little. "You wanna see what else they said?" she asked, her voice cracking, but there were no more tears, "So I'd watch your back, and your little Aaryn's too. I'm his "little Aaryn" now. Not really, though."
She felt horrid. More tears now. She had fallen for a boy. A stupid boy. She didn't even know his full name. Just that he was Dezi. The Dezi that had protected her from Akito. The Dezi that had laughed as Ms. Kohn was yelled at, the Dezi that had traded papers with her, the same Dezi that had hated Ms. Kohn with her. Of course she had fallen for him.
What did they expect? After all that. But they had agreed they would give up on each other. Because he had a girlfriend. And hopefully still would after this. And they weren't meant for each other. So she had to give up on him. She had to. But she didn't want to. She really didn't want to.
Her mind kept wandering back to the wonderful kiss. It really had been absolutely great. Not only had he been a good kisser, but it had felt right. No matter how wrong it had been. It had felt so right. And she wanted it to happen over and over again. She really wanted it. So badly. And that made her feel even more guilty. Because she was now a "boyfriend stealer". Just great.
