Well, it had been a hectic coupla months. And it was only going to get weirder.
It had been a little less than a month since Sophie-Ann had arrived home from school, to find her mother clutching the letter which had set off this whole mad chain of events, but it still felt like yesterday. She'd had to absorb so much new information in that limited window of time- the truth about her Dad's death, the existence of this whole other world, and her part in it. Every moment seemed to bring something new and fantastical- whether it was the moving pictures in the newspaper, the hidden alley full of people draped in robes of various colours (it made Sophie-Ann think in no small way about the musical Joseph and his technicolour dreamcoat, which she'd seen with friends a few months ago) and the incredible things that the textbooks she'd bought dealt with as if they were writing of how plants reproduce, or gravity works.
Now, she stood in the middle of the platform, locked in an embrace with her Mother, the woman who had raised her alone for the last decade of her life. As much as she'd tried to get her head around the whole Witch thing, she still felt distinctly out of place, stood here in jeans and tennis club hoody amongst the throng of wand-wielding, owl-petting students and their robed parents who filled the platform. The two women kissed one another on either cheek, and then Mum was gone, heading back out into the world from which Sophie had come, and would not see again for some time.
Sophie lingered for a second on the platform, thinking of the people she was having to leave behind to set off on this voyage into the unknown- Mum, of course, but also Grandad, the friends she'd come to treat like sisters, coach Everitt, and, of course, Michael.
It hadn't been easy to leave her boyfriend of the last nine months, but what else could a girl have done? She'd have been apart from him for the majority of the next three years, and when they together, she'd have had to spend the whole time lying to him. No, that was no basis for a relationship, she knew that much.
Clasping her trunk in one hand, her sports bag slung across the opposite shoulder (the handle of her racket poking out,) Sophie-Ann muttered something which sounded an awful lot like 'Here goes nothing,' and strode across the platform and onto the train, turning awkwardly so as not to get her bag caught in the doorway.
Sophie wandered along the carriage until she found an apparently unoccupied compartment, and pushed the door open purposefully. Standing on tippy toes, she heaved her trunk into the luggage compartment (why did it have to be so high up?) and pulled out a copy of ACE magazine from her sports bag, before slinging it into the same rack.
Sophie slumped in the corner of the carriage, head against the window, and let out a big sigh, before pulling the magazine up to cover her face and becoming engrossed in an article about Amelie Mauresmo.
