Her father was always off at work during the day so Emily had to spend most of her summer days either at home alone and bored or out and about. Today's plan was to go to Diagon Alley and people watch. She made her way to Florean Fortescue's Ice Cream Parlour and got herself a double scoop of vanilla ice cream and sprinkles. Getting herself a seat on the outside table, she made herself comfortable and began to indulge in her favorite treat.
It was an exciting time of year. Diagon Alley was bustling with young witches and wizards preparing for the new school year. She saw familiar faces of students above and below her year, though none of her close friends in particular. She also saw some fresh faced young folk that could only be new students about to start their first year in the next month. She remembered when she was just as confused starting off, overwhelmed by all the new books and supplies she would need. At least she had the advantage of having a wizard father. She could not imagine what it must be like for muggleborn students.
She thought about her mother, who was a muggle herself. Emily wondered how her mom was able to deal with learning about this entire universe that exists in secret. She must have been even more overwhelmed and confused when her father explained everything. Emily laughed to herself. Her mom must have thought her dad insane for what he must have told her.
It's a shame Emily would not be able to ask her mom about all this.
Emily had lived most of her life without her mother, since she had died when Emily was only three years old. So she was used to it. She had known nothing else. But every once in a while, like right now, she would feel a ping of remorse for not being able to ask questions as innocent as the ones she was thinking of right now.
Emily groaned out loud. Now was not the time for melodramatic thoughts. There was ice cream to be had and people watching to do.
