Broken Wrist (Queety + Kelly)

[Straw Buckett]

With a pop Queety and Straw appeared together at the front entrance to St Mungo's Hospital. Straw checked himself as well her before moving. With Queety's history of questionable apparition it was a miracle that they were not only still holding onto the other but upright and whole. "Well that went better than I expected," he teased knowing she knew fully well what he meant by that.

Straw made his way into the hospital with her. He'd just fallen off the counter of Flourish and Blotts and broken his wrist in an attempt to woo her in a birthday strip style lap dance. Straw was cradling his right arm as Queety walked in next to him with her hand on his back. The pain was very uncomfortable and increasing with every step. Straw was immediately regretting now not taking that Auror first aid course in how to use basic medi magic. This was not how he planned on spending a romantic evening with his girlfriend. Dressed only in his tightie whities and the reminisce of his Muggle business shirt, which was now awkwardly ripped down the middle due to his strip tease performance. The rest of him was naked but he did have socks on, his shoes lay forgotten back in the store.

Now it wasn't the fact that Straw was embarrassed about breaking his wrist, it was more the fact that his work required him to attend the hospital on most occasions and as a result he knew most of the staff there. So dressed in only his underpants, white socks and a questionable shirt with nothing much else to show but a naked torso, Straw was walking through St Mungo's in search of some assistance. "Tell me again why I ripped my shirt?" he thought out loud as they made their way to level 4. He caught the eye of a few nurses who giggled at the sight of him. He smiled and nodded in their direction knowing this would be office gossip by the morning.

“Great… I don’t think I’m ever going to live this down.” He said in a ‘I give up’ type of tone. “I don’t think it could get any worse…”

Queety was as surprised as Straw that she managed to apparate them in one piece to St. Mungo's. "I guess my apparation skills really are improved in an emergency," she muttered, after she let out the breath she was holding. "Good to know I'm not completely incompetent." 

As they made their way through the hospital, Queety noticed the weird stares and giggling around them. She was sure they had seen patients come in like this before, so why would they be acting so differently with another patient coming by in this weird state of undress. After all, the real focus should be on his wrist that was starting to look a little black and blue. When she overheard one of the nurses whispering Straw's name in a fit of giggles, Queety realized that the reaction was because a large amount of the staff actually knew Straw. In retrospect, she should have at least tried to find her work robes to cover him, even though they would have been a very snug fit. But she was so concerned about his wrist that she did not quite plan ahead. 

"Why did you rip off your shirt?" Queety repeated his question. "Because you were following your testosterone-induced tendency to try to seduce me as your mate. It's purely a natural instinct." She laughed, hoping her joke would make him feel a little better about the current situation they were in. 

She then noticed a pile of gowns for patients and quickly ran over to grab one. It opened up in the back but it was better coverage than his current situation. She held it up for Straw to take. "At least you had some clothing on. Imagine if all you had left was the sparkly thong!"

Trying desperately not to look at her watch every five minutes, Kelly nonetheless was counting down the hours before she could leave St. Mungo's and go home to her love, who she imagined was very warm and comfortable in bed right now. Working the late late shift was always the worst, and as much as Kelly loved her job, she much preferred starting early in the morning and being home late afternoon. So she worked quickly to make the time go faster, smiling to her patients and giving the young ones lollies and candy when they were good. When her wand beeped, alerting her to a request to attend the emergency room, Kelly couldn't help the thrill that went through her body.

It was unusual for Kelly to be in the emergency room as the treating doctor, since she was the attending of the magical accidents floor, but she had a deal with the nurses on the front desk of the ER that if any of her friends or loved ones appeared, they were to call her down immediately. Just as a precaution. She made her way quickly upstairs to the fourth floor, where the emergency room was located, and spoke to the nurse at the desk, who handed her a file with a barely suppressed grin. Kelly looked around the busy emergency room and spotted her target; she smiled herself and made her way over.

"Who's wearing a sparkly thong?" Kelly asked as she approached Straw and Queety. Straw was huddled in his patient's robe looking embarrassed, and Queety seemed torn between amusement and mortification. She grinned cheekily and raised her eyebrows, taking in their appearances. "What have you done to yourself, Buckett? The nurses are having a field day over there."

He shouldn’t have said that, why oh why did he say, out loud, that things couldn’t get any worse?! “Shhhh” he hushed giving Queety a playful nudge as he took the gown and put it on. “The wall have eyes” but it was too late. No sooner had he said this did Kelly arrive behind them causing him to jump and he immediately turned red. “Nothing” he said a little too quickly. “No body’s wearing a sparkly thong…” but the damage was done, she knew exactly who and forever more Straw would now be unable to look Kelly in the eyes ever again… friendship over! Time to run away to spain.

“I… slipped” he said almost giving himself away with his guilty expression. “I slipped on some papers, on the floor, and fell on my wrist. I think it’s broken” he still not looking Kelly in the eyes. IN fact Straw looked like pouting child, if his wrist wasn’t broken he’d probably have his arms crossed over his chest.

He frowned as a passing nurse, without a hint of direction, stuck her head around the corner, looked around, found his eyes, giggled and walked away. “Great...” Straw said rolling his eyes. “Bloody laughing stock of the hospital” he mumbled more to himself than anyone. “Can you just fix this for me Evans? Quick fix right?!”

Kelly couldn't help it; at the petulant expression on Straw's face, she burst out laughing. "Oh, Straw, I'm sorry, I know it's not funny, you really do look like you're in a lot of pain. You just look so much like Josh right now when he gets a boo boo," she said, imitating Josh's childish voice as she said so. "I'll definitely fix it, sparkly thong or not." She gently took Straw's hand in her own and felt with her fingertips his wrist, which indeed felt broken. Feeling a rush of deja vu, she pulled her wand out of her pocket and waved it over Straw's wrist, performing a quick spell which would tell her definitely if her hunch was correct. Her wand beeped twice and she nodded.

"It's definitely broken, Straw," she said, and as Straw babbled his excuses about slipping and falling, her eyebrows raised further and further up her forehead, until they almost disappeared into her hair. "You 'slipped and fell'?" she repeated, not entirely convinced. "Straw, this is quite a bad break, you would have had to have fallen on your wrist from quite a height, and you're not that tall. Come on, tell me; what were you standing on? Because this definitely tells me you were up high. Injuries don't lie to Mediwitches, we know these things."

As she waited for Straw to spill the true story, Kelly repeated the same actions she'd performed on Hermione earlier. Waving her wand, she muttered "Episkey", to mend the broken bones in Straw's wrist, and then, moving over to the tray of supplies set up beside the hospital bed, she withdrew a clean white bandage, and a replica of the bright pink pain relief potion. Quickly, yet gently, Kelly bandaged up Straw's wrist so that the bones would have some support as they mended, and then she picked up the file that the nurse had handed her, and handed it to Queety. "Because you came in to the E.R., you'll have to fill in the paperwork. Queety, do you mind, seeing as Straw won't be able to use that wrist properly for a few days?"

Kelly lifted the vial of pink potion and waved it in front of Straw. "The spell mends the broken bones, but this will help with the swelling and the general pain," she explained, feeling more like a broken record than ever. What was it with Aurors and breaking their hands and wrists? "And I mean it: don't use your hand for anything strenuous for a few days." Kelly paused, moving back out of Mediwitch mode for a moment, and grinned again. "But seriously. What did you do to yourself? If you tell me, I'll tell the nurses it was something very masculine and gritty, so they forget about the ripped shirt and no trousers."

She should have seen this coming. Kelly normally did not work on this floor so they were hoping that if she happened to to be working that day, they would not run into her. However, there she was, standing there and mending Straw's wrist. She was acting quite professional and nonjudgemental to Straw's (lack of) outfit, but Queety knew that sparkle in her eye that she was looking forward to hearing the whole story behind this injury and would probably laugh about it with Kat later on. Heck, Queety would probably be laughing along with them. And Straw... well maybe one day he'd laugh about it, too. 

She took the paperwork from Kelly with a nod. Rather annoying as Kelly clearly mended the broken bone faster than it would take Queety to even fill out the first page. She listened to Kelly's instructions for Straw to not use his hand and wrist for the next few days while it healed. She knew that she would have to be the one to babysit Straw and make sure he actually followed those important instructions. Knowing him, he would try to show off with more push ups later that night as soon as they got home. 

When Kelly further pressed to know about the origins of the break, Queety glanced up at Straw, wondering how much or how little to tell her. It was already clear that they both were terrible at keeping any secrets so likely the whole story would come out eventually, or Kelly, being as intuitive as she is, would put the pieces together if they only told her part of the story. Perhaps it was better to just rip off the bandaid all at once. Knowing that Straw would be too hesitant to give many details, she figured she would just come out and say it. 

"He fell from the counter at Flourish and Blotts," she said, keeping her voice low so that only Kelly and Straw could hear her. "He was dancing up there and there was a lot of fog and he didn't notice the papers on the counter and he slipped on them and fell." She paused for a moment and glanced again at Straw. She knew what Kelly would ask next so she went ahead and answered it before anyone else could speak. "His shirt is ripped because he tore it off and he doesn't have pants because he didn't bring any." At this point, she had a little trouble holding back the grin that was forming on her face at the thought of Straw's little show prior to the accident. "It was a birthday present for me," she finished before she began to giggle. 

She then wrapped her arm around Straw's waist and gave him a tight squeeze. "I'm so sorry," she said as she continued to giggle. "I don't mean to laugh. I just don't know how you even got into the store without any pants. Didn't you think to bring some just in case?"
