It was late at night, the Buckett-White household was quiet except for the light rain falling outside. Queety was curled up against Straw, who was sprawled out on the bed, completely knocked out. Nothing in the world could wake him from this slumber. She watched as his chest rose and fell as he breathed, felt his skin against hers, felt his warmth. She cuddled a little closer, resting her head on top of his chest as she listened to his heartbeat. Even though nights like this were very regular, the intimacy between her and Straw still amazed her, as if it were something very new. She began tracing circles with her finger along his stomach. It was only a little over a year ago that the two of them were still maintaining their completely platonic friendship. She could not pinpoint the exact time when feelings started to creep up in the romantic sense. But she could remember the evening they both admitted out loud to each other that there was something more going on between them. Queety sighed, closing her eyes, thinking back to that very evening....
June 2014
"Hey, Straw, get your butt in here!" Queety called from the kitchen. "You are not going to make me do all the work. Just because we're calling this weekend a holiday doesn't mean you don't have to do anything."
By holiday, she meant a kid-free holiday. The kids were spending the weekend with their mother which meant that Queety and Straw were celebrating a weekend without any responsibilities. Most of their plans involved watching rated R movies, eating junk food without having to explain why the kids couldn't eat it as well, playing video games, make a fort out of blankets and pillows and probably a lot of sleeping. Perhaps they would venture outside and do something that normal adults would do, like go to a bar or a dance club or something but that was still tentative. They were mostly looking forward to sleeping through til the morning without having one of the kids come into one of their rooms and wake them up as soon as the sun rose.
The first order of business was to make dinner on the Friday evening of their holiday weekend. Queety had suggested they go full out and make an extensive Mexican dinner. However, the trick was that neither of them could use magic in the cooking. Just their good old bare hands. The ingredients were all laid out on the counter ready to be prepared. Queety figured it would be good bonding time since things recently had seemed a little weird between the two of them, though she could not exactly pinpoint just what.
The weirdness had begun when Queety had brought home a new boyfriend a few months ago. It was nothing serious but Straw just did not seem to like him. Figuring that he was just being like an overprotective older brother, she ignored it and continued seeing this guy for a while before they realized it just was not working out. Mostly the guy did not like that Queety was devoting most of her time taking care of the triplets and frankly Straw, too. And that relationship ended rather quickly. But that had ended ages ago and the weird feelings have stayed. So she was not sure if that guy really was the cause of them or if it was just coincidence.
Regardless, she was hoping that this weekend together would both give them a break and make their friendship as strong as ever. Though sometimes she was unsure if it could get much stronger. It had already gone through hell and high water and has still remained strong. Through everything they had gone through in their short few decades of living, they still remained best friends. Their friendship could definitely make it through this weekend. Nothing could happen to change what they had going, right?
When Straw came into the kitchen, Queety instinctively had a wide grin on her face. She held up one of the kitchen knives for him. "We'll start off easy," she said. "You can cut up the onions and peppers and start getting those fried up. I'll start making the rice and beans."
