Kelly picked up the glass that was sitting before her and took a careful sip of the firewhisky, grimacing only slightly at the burn, before she set it back down on the table top. She was settled cosily in a booth towards the back of the bar, killing time before she was due to meet Kat for what she had assumed was her surprise birthday party. The short invitation had made it clear that costumes were not only essential, they needed to be Hogwarts-related, and so Kelly was already dressed in her old black school robes, red and gold tie around her neck, as well as a white blouse and black skirt, which fell to her knees. The get up had earned her the odd perplexed expression, but she ignored them. It was her birthday, after all, and she didn't have to explain herself to anyone.
The Hogshead was slightly busier than she'd ever seen it before, which she put down to Saturday afternoon business. Next to her glass of firewhisky, Kelly had sat a small wrapped package, which until now she had ignored. She knew it was from her parents, as their expensive tawny owl had delivered it to her apartment that morning, but after the fiasco with the bridesmaid dresses, Kelly was nervous about opening it. She was sure her father would have bought her a gift, and from the shape and the weight of the package, Kelly was guessing jewellery of some sort, but she also expected a scathing message from her mother that surpassed the usual 'Happy Birthday'. But her friends had already sent her warm wishes that morning, so her disappointing parents were the last of her worries.
Kelly took another sip of her firewhisky, raising her eyes to the window where outside the first few leaves had begun to change colour. She loved autumn. Not just because her birthday was the first week of the new season, but she loved the colours and the cooler temperatures. It looked as if it was going to be a nice evening, and she was glad for that, considering she had no idea what Kat had planned. All Kelly knew, other than the rule about the costumes, was that she was expected at the Shrieking Shack no later than ten. She smiled to herself, caught between nerves at what could possibly be planned, and excitement.
